International Experience Canada (IEC)

Come work and travel in Canada through IEC! This program allows young people from various countries to live and work in Canada for a specific period of time.

This initiative can help you:

  • Gain valuable international work experience. 💼

General Requirements to Participate in IEC 📋

  • Be a citizen of a country that has a participation agreement with Canada. 🇨🇦
  • Be between 18 and 35 years old (age range may vary by country). 🔞
  • Have a passport valid for at least 12 months after your arrival in Canada. 🛂
  • Have enough money to cover your initial expenses upon arriving in Canada. 💰
  • Have no criminal record (a criminal record certificate may be required). 👮‍♀️
  • Meet other specific requirements depending on the category requested. 

IEC Program Categories

The IEC program is divided into three main categories, each aimed at different types of participants, depending on their profile and country of origin. 

Some countries only allow one entry. Others allow two entries, but in different categories.

The Working Holiday category allows young people from participating countries to travel and work in Canada for up to 24 months, depending on the country.

Characteristics:

  • It is an open work permit, which provides flexibility 
  • You don't need a job offer. You can work for any employer (except certain exceptions) 
  • You can work for more than one employer, and in any location in Canada. 
  • Ideal for those who want to explore Canada while maintaining a source of income to finance their stay. 
  • The number of places is limited and is allocated through rounds of invitations.

This category is aimed at young people who have already secured a job offer in Canada and is an excellent opportunity for those looking to gain Canadian work experience.

Characteristics:

  • It is a closed work permit.
  • You must have a job offer in Canada that contributes to your professional development.   
  • You will work for the same employer and in the same location in Canada. 
  • The work must be paid and not self-employed. 
  • The work must be graded (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3). A TEER 4 work may qualify if it is related to your field of study. 
  • The number of places is limited and is allocated through rounds of invitations.

  • If you are eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker program, you may also be able to explore other immigration options through various Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).

This category is designed for students who wish to undertake internships in Canada as part of their academic training.

Characteristics:

  • You must be a registered student at a post-secondary education institution. 
  • You need to complete this internship to finish your studies. 
  • You must have a job offer for an internship or apprenticeship in Canada (it must be directly related to your field of study). 
  • You will work for the same employer in the same location during your stay in Canada. 
  • It is a specific work permit for the employer.  
  • The number of places is limited and is allocated through rounds of invitations.
